Flexport brings Product and Engineering Teams to Amsterdam

TL;DR Flexport is opening a product and engineering hub in Amsterdam, join us for our open house on 5 February!

Get ready, Amsterdam! Flexport is building product and engineering teams in our Vijzelstraat office in 2020. We’ll be joining the existing operations and sales teams to further engage with this thriving logistics hub. This will be the fifth of our offices to have a technology and engineering presence, and our focus will be on modernizing and streamlining customs processes and partner collaboration.

Why Amsterdam? As we continue building out new technology in logistics, it’s important we work in the center of the industry alongside those who know the landscape best. With nearby Rotterdam being the largest port in Europe and Amsterdam airport Schiphol being a major international presence in air logistics, putting our European engineering site in our Amsterdam office is an obvious choice.

Engineering Without (and Within) Borders

Flexport Europe is growing fast, we move more and more goods in and out of the EU. The Customs team facilitates all the regulatory requirements when moving goods across borders. It’s a product-oriented team that works in close collaboration with customs brokers and Flexport’s freight partners to make sure our customers products make it smoothly through any red tape that might come up. Our work starts with invoices received from factories and ends with the electronic submission of filings to government agencies. In addition to our software the data ops team uses advanced OCR technology for the digitization, allowing Flexport customs brokers to easily classify the products at the SKU level, prepare filings and finally submit them.

Technology

On the frontend, we build micro applications with React, manage the flow of data with GraphQL/Relay, and test our application with Jest. On the backend, we’re in the process of decoupling our monolithic Rails app and introducing services using other languages, such as Rails, Java, Node.js. Our data is persisted in mostly Postgres. Our stack is hosted on AWS using Docker.

Join Us

On Wednesday, 5 February, we’re hosting an event to celebrate our engineering and product teams expansion to Amsterdam, and to meet more of the local tech community. There will be a few TED-style talks from Flexport leaders and engineers as well as the chance to network with fellow technologists. Check out the event page and let us know if you’re interested in attending. Hope to see you there!

We’re also hiring! Check out the Amsterdam-based roles in our 1,800+ global organization in software engineering, design, operations and more. Apply here if you’re interested: https://www.flexport.com/careers/locations/amsterdam
